The Mercatali House in Ronta

This is a residential villa built in the 1920’s and very probably decorated in those ears with a ceramic frieze which runs around three sides of the house at first-floor level. The figuration, a vegetable spray on which snails crawl, is composed of single square tiles and framed by spiral motifs which alternate in red and green. The geometrical decoration is resumed in the series of small diamond-shaped tiles in an orange colour reproduced on each of the responds which divide the facades.

The realization is certainly by the San Lorenzo Furnaces, which Galileo Chini artistically directed until  1925, supplying the drawings for the various artefacts. The ceramic production for private building was one of the characterizing activities of the manufacturing, and numerous examples of this remain in the area, as well as in Florence and, above all, in Viareggio and Montecatini.
